Source-Connect Now is a similar product, but it’s free! If you have the budget, however, I recommend ipDTL because it has greater mixing capabilities and is more common in the industry, making it easier to work with other companies and voice talent. That being said, when just beginning, Source-Connect Now can certainly get the job done. Both services offer a private link to send to your guests and allow you to have more than one guest in different locations. It’s just like connecting via Skype, but at a much better quality. As long as you both have a solid internet connection and suitable recording environments, your interview will sound great. You didn’t even have to leave your bedroom!
Krumhansl proposed that we’ve heard enough songs in major keys to be able to pick up on what songs in major do, and how they should sound. Just like when you watch enough spy movies, you can basically predict what’s supposed to happen in the spy movie you’re about to watch. I recommend getting a professional coach with some years of experience, who you respect as a musician, and who you admire as a singer (I’m simply describing my own vocal coach here).
Before you think about production or even buy a microphone, you must first create a plan for your episode structure. Will you have an intro and outro? Is there music? How are you licensing that music? Will there be segments or is it one long interview or monologue?
I don’t know what it is about this West Virginia University hub, but I have found time and time again that even bands without a huge national following can attract a packed, excited crowd in Morgantown. People just can’t get enough music here, and they’re welcoming enough to give you a shot and come to your show even if they’ve never heard your music. Plus, with West Virginia’s proximity to Pittsburgh, Washington, DC, Baltimore, and Columbus (not to mention all the other secret hot spots in Ohio), it’s an easy detour that will surely be worth the trip.
Lulu’s creation mirrors the themes of its plot. Berg started writing it after being emboldened by the success of his first opera, Wozzeck, in the 1920s. Getting a space prepped for a recording session takes a considerable amount of time. If you’re recording clients, or guest musicians, or just helping out a friend, always try to ask for a specific tech plot in advance so you can plan accordingly. There’s nothing that will suck the inspiration and energy right out of the room more than waiting around to set up mics and inputs when the musicians are already done setting up their gear.
The smartest thing I’ve done as a musician has been to keep an open mind. That’s lead me to learning music technology—an essential tool for any modern musician—and also to gaining valuable insights into other worlds of instruments, such as horns, various string instruments, percussion instruments, piano, and others, so that I can communicate a vision much more effectively with players of those instruments, as well as compose for them.
Music is such a volatile and unpredictable market. You never know when a song will take off or not. Why risk taking a one-time work-for-hire fee for a few hundred dollars when you can have X% ownership? Owning and registering a publishing percentage ensures fair compensation if the release sells well. You never know what could be worth exploring in more depth. If they’re doing really well with a strong following in Southern California, even though they’re based in Florida, maybe you want to look at expanding your reach to Southern California.
One such example of horizontal hemiola that follows a similar design appears in George Frideric Handel’s iconic “Alla Hornpipe” from his Water Music Suite No. 2. In the video below, the hemiola occurs about 13 seconds in. It’s easiest to notice this happening in the harmony voices, which switch from a 3 feel to a 4 feel, with quarter notes being momentarily grouped in sets of four and groups spreading across the bar line. Without changing time signatures, the pulse of the music momentarily changes, resulting in a perfect example of horizontal hemiola.
