Using whatever format you want (spreadsheet, notepad, stickies) write down the things you want to get done, say, this month. That way, when you sit down to write songs, record music, email a music industry pro, or whatever, you know exactly what you need to do next. Plus, as you cross things off the list, it’s a little encouragement that you’re making progress.

It used to be that the only way for songwriters to get financial support for their craft was via a music publishing deal. Advances were offered as part of a deal that required the songwriter giving up a percentage of their royalties in exchange for industry support, royalty collection and financial assistance.

The specific frequencies you choose to boost will vary from track to track, and especially from genre to genre. It’s common to apply a subtle boost on the high end using a gentle shelf, typically around 8 kHz or so. So be sure you don’t bring back any of that nasty sibilance — and be careful boosting between 3-6 kHz, as it often causes the vocal to sound shrill and harsh.

The djembe is one of West Africa’s best known instruments. It is essentially a goblet-shaped drum carved from a single piece of African hardwood with a head made from rope-tightened animal hide.

And the record did great in the marketplace. The fact that this was a full live performance documented for the world to see meant that Brown could advertise his intense, immense live show to audiences around the country who hadn’t yet seen him perform — further securing revenues from future tours and album sales for decades to come.

We all know that the true soul of a record comes alive in that final crazy idea you throw in at the very end of your session — so plan for it a little bit. The frontwoman of the Israeli group Panic Ensemble’s first solo effort covers a lot of ground. Kraus’ versatile pipes carry her through multiple genres from cabaret to orchestral/Balkan pop, maintaining a sensual curiosity throughout. I’m interested to see whether she brings out a full band; her arrangements are as joyously unpredictable as an early Bjork record.

But Mitski (she’s much more impressive than Sum 41, not sorry) has a voice and quality in her music that feels super cathartic — it’s like she’s reading from your diary and releasing your demons for you. She’s also Asian-American, and I grew up with zero Asian-American musicians to look up to.

Daniel Martin is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, guitar instructor, and rock historian from Lancaster, PA. His music-related articles have been published on Counterpunch and Perfect Sound Forever. His band, Marty’s Invasion, has “invaded” multiple cities on the East Coast.

Although I loved being a DJ, I wanted to go beyond the playing and really understand how music worked. When I turned 18, I had the opportunity to move to Madrid and study Sound Engineering and Production. Although very insightful, it still wasn’t enough — I was hungry for knowledge and wanted to understand how a DJ could connect with an audience, so I delved into the world of Musicology to understand how music affects and influences our brain.

Over our C minor chord, we get a triplet figure of all B♭s, making the chord a C minor 7. This is followed by the use of a passing tone (Ab) to get from the 7th to the 5th. Finally, over the B♭, we have an F (the fifth of the chord), moving to a G (the 13th, another tension).
