Events of Camp 1401 in 2008
On Saturday March 29, 2008 Camp 1401 attended a dedication ceremony for the Civil War Trails marker located at St. James Episcopal Church on Harper Ave. in downtown Lenoir. The marker details and calls to remembrance the April 15-16, 1865 occupation and plundering of Lenoir during U.S. General George Stoneman's raid of eastern Tenn. and western North Carolina. After General Robert E. Lee's April 9th surrender at Appomattox and while U.S. President Lincoln laid in state in Washington D.C., after his assassination by John Wilkes Booth, Stoneman's men were busy plundering and scouring this area. St. James church was commandeered by Stoneman's command as a prison for many Confederate prisoners on their way to Camp Chase in Ohio. Many were old men and had not been fed in days, while being marched relentlessly. The lovely and patriotic ladies of Lenoir brought relief to these soldiers in the form of food. Pictured at the marker, from left to right, are Camp Adjutant Ed Boldin, noted NC War Between the States author Michael Hardy, Compatriots Roger Jett & John Jett, Camp Commander Greg Cannon, Compatriot John Soots, and Camp Chaplain Danny Kincaid.
On Monday Sept. 8, 2008, J.J. Pettigrew Camp 1401 welcome members of the newly chartered Burke Tigers Camp in Burke County to the regular monthly meeting. The meeting was called to order by Commander Greg Cannon and opening scripture was read by Adjutant Ed Boldin, after which Compatriot John Jett opened the meeting with prayer. Valuable information and ideas were exchanged between the camps as well as warm comraderie. Camp T-shirts, hats, and golf shirts ideas were presented by Lt. Commander Chad Marley. Discussion was held concerning the October Molasses festival in Dudley Shoals highlighted by Lt. Commander Marley's Powerpoints presentation. The Camp voted to purchase these items contingent on prices by the local vendor and then closed the meeting with prayer.
